In the Evening Standard London UK on Tuesday 30th August 2011 there was a big Headline in the Education Section of the paper 'Ditch the degree for job training' With degrees no longer considered a passport to success, taking a vocational training course makes sense.
In the light of spirally tuition fees, mass job loss, competition of new types of careers and a global industry that looks nothing like it did 10 year ago, getting the skills or qualifications you want as cost effectively as possible it affect a change has become even more important.
The belief that you need a college education to have a well-paying and rewarding job is quickly fading. A four-year degree definitely has its benefits in some parts if the business world, but it is not the only path to a successful career. You only have to check out some of the great entrepreneurs who had made a huge success and create employment for thousands.
Other aspects ought to be considered also, for instance according to some of the latest labour statistics, eight of the 10 fastest-growing occupations through 2014 do not require a bachelor's degree. Moreover, these jobs, which include health technology, plumbing, fire fighting and automotive repair, which are less vulnerable to outsourcing. After all, if a fire breaks out, you need the fire department to be a few minutes away, not halfway around the world.
Success comes from learning. Learning is a lifelong exposure to all that is around you. If you don't have a college degree, but you are a lifelong learner devoted to developing yourself and learning new and relevant skills, you will be successful. If you are under the assumption once you have a degree you can quit learning and find a nice well paying and stable career, you are likely to be disappointed.

I think once again the rose tinted glasses have been removed for many people. This is not to say that not everyone deserves a well paying job and security, but the world seems to have shrunk, more people are competing for less and less golden nuggets and the cost of living is increasing month by month.
Starting a business is not for everyone, but even a small-side business can be a great supplemental income source. Getting qualified or exposing yourself to some practical training can be one way to inject a level of professionalism and even specialism before you embark on a new sideline business or career.
